Grave Sight by Charlaine HarrisTitle: Grave Sight (Harper Connelly Mysteries)
Author: Charlaine Harris
Pages: 310
Genre: Paranormal Mystery

It looks like Sookie Stackhouse author Charlaine Harris is set to have yet another supernatural TV series based on her books. Her Harper Connelly mystery series has been picked up by Syfy. The first book in the series, Grave Sight, is well worth a look. It introduces heroine Harper Connelly. Just like Sookie, Harper’s a bit odd. After surviving a lightning strike, Harper has an uncanny ability to find dead people. In this novel, she is invited to a small town in Arkansas to find the body of a teenage girl. Her stepbrother, Tolliver, accompanies her in his role as her manager and general dogsbody. Finding the body proves to be no problem at all, but then Harper’s life is threatened, Tolliver is thrown into jail. Someone is willing to go to any length to hide a secret, and Harper and Tolliver have a big fight on their hands to get away from the town.

Bon Appetit, True Blood Fans!

True Blood Cookbook ArticleHave you always felt tempted by the meals whipped up by Lafayette at Merlotte’s? Excited to try Gran’s pecan pie? Well you might get your chance to try authentic Bon Temps cuisine a little later this year! HBO and Chronicle Books have just announced that The True Blood Cookbook will be published in Fall 2012.

The official publication will be by series creator Alan Ball (together with Karen Sommer Shallett and Marcelle Bienvenu). It’s not going to be just a collection of boring instructions on how to make biscuits or gumbo, but will instead include photos from Seasons 1 to 4, short feature stories on the show, and of course the best recipes for delicious southern fare.

Ball is clearly throwing his weight behind this project, and says, “This book will be substantial, with recipes that capture the unique ambiance, dark humor, and complexity of characters that make up the magical and offbeat world of True Blood. In other words, it will be a worthy of ‘Trubies’ everywhere.” Chronicle Books adds, “The True Blood Cookbook will relish the flavors of the True Blood universe with plenty of authentic dish (sic) —both on the plate, and behind-the-scenes.”

No doubt, rabid Truebies will be lining up to get their copies of the cookbook come fall!

Bon appetit honorary Bon Temps residents!

Anna Paquin and Joe Manganiello in True Blood

Sookie and Alcide in True Blood

Although the next season of True Blood won’t make an appearance on our television screens until Summer this year, the cast and crew have slowly been revealing little tidbits about what’s going to happen in Season 5. As always, there’s plenty of speculation about Sookie’s love-life. When we left Sookie at the end of Season 4, she had declared herself single, and sworn off Eric and Bill… and it doesn’t look like she’s going to be spending a lot of time with the two vampires either!

In an interview with TV Guide, Alexander Skarsgard, who plays the scrumptious Eric, reveals that Sookie’s “feelings are still there for both Eric and Bill… the attraction is still there, but they’re preoccupied, and so is she.” So it looks like we won’t be seeing Eric and Bill getting it on with Sookie. Instead, the two, who used to perpetually be at each other’s throats, are more likely to spend time working closely with each other in Season 5, as they try and deal with the fallout from killing Nan Flanagan in the Season 4 finale. Plus of course, it looks like Russell Edgington’s baaack (in one form or another), and Eric and Bill will have to deal with that too!

In the meantime, another hunky male in True Blood is going to be showing his alpha chops a lot more. Joe Manganiello declared that his character Alcide won’t be “taking anyone’s s**t anymore… Now you’re going to see an Alcide who’s going to slam you up against the wall and do his thing.” Oooh, I love a forceful alpha male. What’s more, Alcide may be using some of that forcefulness on Sookie herself. Manganiello teased that there’ll be many scenes and run-ins between Sookie and Alcide that “make you really nervous”.

For those of us who watch True Blood for the… hmmm… scenery, then you’ll also be pleased to know that Manganiello revealed that Season 5 will be just as risqué as before, with lots of “hot-chick werewolves and badass dudes” to keep you entertained.  Hmmmm… nice!

True Blood Season 5 will be back on HBO in Summer 2012.

How Alcide Got His Six Pack

Joe Manganiello

Sexy actor Joe Manganiello, who plays werewolf Alcide Herveaux on True Blood has a lean and ripped physique, and he doesn’t hesitate to show his body off on the series, baring his six-pack at the drop of a hat.

What does the 6’5” Manganiello do to keep his body in such great shape? The 35-year-old graduate of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama has always been athletic, having played varsity basketball, volleyball, and football. Still, he needed a little bit of help to get as ripped as he looks on True Blood.

His chiselled physique does not come without sacrifices. He trains twice a day, six days a week, and follows a strict high-protein diet. His training and nutrition programs have been specially formulated for him by Ron Matthews, the celebrity trainer who whipped Hugh Jackman into shape to play Wolverine in the X-Men movies.

When Manganiello and Matthews met, they decided that Alcide should have a lean yet muscular look. To achieve the look, Manganiello spends 45 minutes doing cardio in the morning before breakfast. He has a separate weight-training session later in the day. Manganiello’s athletic background allowed him to quickly adjust to the training. Diet-wise, Manganiello follows a high-protein diet, and eats small meals frequently. He has had to give up sugar and bread for meat, whey and egg whites, together with vegetables.

Although looking like Alcide is part of Manganiello’s job description, his dedication to achieving the best look is admirable, and requires consistent effort and discipline. It’s no wonder he’s one of the most successful cast members on True Blood. Earlier this year, he was voted “Favorite Pop-Culture Werewolf of All Time” by the readers of Entertainment Weekly.
