Grave Sight by Charlaine HarrisTitle: Grave Sight (Harper Connelly Mysteries)
Author: Charlaine Harris
Pages: 310
Genre: Paranormal Mystery

It looks like Sookie Stackhouse author Charlaine Harris is set to have yet another supernatural TV series based on her books. Her Harper Connelly mystery series has been picked up by Syfy. The first book in the series, Grave Sight, is well worth a look. It introduces heroine Harper Connelly. Just like Sookie, Harper’s a bit odd. After surviving a lightning strike, Harper has an uncanny ability to find dead people. In this novel, she is invited to a small town in Arkansas to find the body of a teenage girl. Her stepbrother, Tolliver, accompanies her in his role as her manager and general dogsbody. Finding the body proves to be no problem at all, but then Harper’s life is threatened, Tolliver is thrown into jail. Someone is willing to go to any length to hide a secret, and Harper and Tolliver have a big fight on their hands to get away from the town.

Deadlocked by Charlaine HarrisTitle: Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse Book 12)
Author: Charlaine Harris
Pages: 336
Genre: Vampire Romance

Sookie Stackhouse is back in Deadlocked, the latest instalment of Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series. The book series, which inspired hit HBO TV series True Blood, is still going strong, and Deadlocked is the twelfth in the series. The extremely powerful Felipe de Castro (Vampire King of Lousiana, Arkansas and Nevada) is in town, and Eric’s in a pickle because the body of a woman whose blood he just drank has shown up in his front yard. Sookie’s none too pleased because she had to watch Eric drink from the woman… then she has to work with Bill, (now the official Area 5 investigator) to look into the woman’s murder. Even though Sookie thinks that the dead girl has nothing to do with her, she soon finds out that the girl’s fate is intertwined with her own, as she deals with a devious enemy who wants to take Sookie out. The book is now available for pre-order, and will be released on May 1. You can also read excerpts of the book on Harris’ website.

True Blood is Dropping the Ball

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Alan BallIt looks like smash hit HBO series True Blood is dropping the Ball – Alan Ball. Multiple reports, including a statement from the man himself, have confirmed that series creator Ball will be relinquishing his role with the show after the fifth season. Ball has been the brains behind the sexy show that has captured the imagination of fans from around the world. Reports cite exhaustion as the reason for Ball’s decision to take a step back.

It’s no wonder he’s exhausted. Ball’s been involved in everything, from the adaptation from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books, to the casting, to the sets, and costumes. He continues in this role for Season 5, which is currently being filmed. However, it remains to be seen if True Blood will have a Season 6, and how Ball will be involved in that, should it materialize.

There’s no chance that True Blood would be cancelled. The show is going stronger than ever, with the average number of viewers for Season 4 coming in at more than twice the average for Season 1. With such good numbers, there’s no reason for HBO to kill the golden goose. The only concern that fans might have – and I can hear you moaning about it already – is that the quality of the show could slip because Ball isn’t there every day to make sure things are going right.

That too seems unlikely. For one thing, Ball will continue to be involved in a supervisory role, albeit not in the hands-on everyday running of the show. But isn’t that what all CEOs do? Set up a company, then let his excellent staff handle the operations? Ball has put in place a superb team of writers, production staff, cast, and crew, and they will no doubt be more than capable of pulling off many more excellent seasons of this wonderful show. Ball himself certainly thinks so. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ball said, “Because of the fantastic cast, writers, producers and crew, with whom I have been lucky enough to work these past five years, I know I could step back and the show will continue to thrive as I look forward to new and exciting ventures.”

According to a statement from HBO, Ball will be working on other projects after True Blood, including Cinemax’s Banshee and HBO’s Wichita.

Anna Paquin and Joe Manganiello in True Blood

Sookie and Alcide in True Blood

Although the next season of True Blood won’t make an appearance on our television screens until Summer this year, the cast and crew have slowly been revealing little tidbits about what’s going to happen in Season 5. As always, there’s plenty of speculation about Sookie’s love-life. When we left Sookie at the end of Season 4, she had declared herself single, and sworn off Eric and Bill… and it doesn’t look like she’s going to be spending a lot of time with the two vampires either!

In an interview with TV Guide, Alexander Skarsgard, who plays the scrumptious Eric, reveals that Sookie’s “feelings are still there for both Eric and Bill… the attraction is still there, but they’re preoccupied, and so is she.” So it looks like we won’t be seeing Eric and Bill getting it on with Sookie. Instead, the two, who used to perpetually be at each other’s throats, are more likely to spend time working closely with each other in Season 5, as they try and deal with the fallout from killing Nan Flanagan in the Season 4 finale. Plus of course, it looks like Russell Edgington’s baaack (in one form or another), and Eric and Bill will have to deal with that too!

In the meantime, another hunky male in True Blood is going to be showing his alpha chops a lot more. Joe Manganiello declared that his character Alcide won’t be “taking anyone’s s**t anymore… Now you’re going to see an Alcide who’s going to slam you up against the wall and do his thing.” Oooh, I love a forceful alpha male. What’s more, Alcide may be using some of that forcefulness on Sookie herself. Manganiello teased that there’ll be many scenes and run-ins between Sookie and Alcide that “make you really nervous”.

For those of us who watch True Blood for the… hmmm… scenery, then you’ll also be pleased to know that Manganiello revealed that Season 5 will be just as risqué as before, with lots of “hot-chick werewolves and badass dudes” to keep you entertained.  Hmmmm… nice!

True Blood Season 5 will be back on HBO in Summer 2012.
