Dead to the World by Charlaine HarrisTitle: Dead to the World (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood)
Author: Charlaine Harris
Pages: 304
Genre: Paranormal Romance

All right, admit it. You loved Amnesia Eric in Season 4 of True Blood didn’t you? After all, who can resist a 1000-year-old Viking vampire who’s suddenly vulnerable, child-like, and even giggly? Well if you’re still pining for the innocent, lovable Eric, then it’s time to read Charlaine Harris’ Dead to the World, on which Season 4 was loosely based. Sookie is back in Bon Temps after the Mississippi sojourn, and wants nothing more to do with the treacherous Bill. She’s happy doing her thing at Merlotte’s, and is thrilled that Bill is leaving the country on business. No more vampires or any supernatural creatures for now! But as Sookie is driving home late one night, she runs across Eric wandering around half-naked, with no clue who she is, who he is, or where he is. Sookie finds an Eric who’s vastly different from the ruthless Sheriff of Area 5 whom she knows. He’s frightened and vulnerable, the victim of a coven of witches. Sookie – bless her heart! – takes Eric in, and protects him with the help of other supernaturals in the area. As always, Sookie’s love life takes center stage. She’s incredibly attracted to the new Eric, but she’s not over Bill. Then there’s Alcide, who’s making a play for her, and Sam, who’s always pined for her… What’s a girl to do?

Speculation about what’s going to happen in the next season of True Blood continues to percolate, with blogs going wild about the first official teaser for Season 5. “Buried”, a 30-second clip that was released a few weeks ago doesn’t give much away – no surprise, given how notoriously tight-lipped series creator Alan Ball and the cast and crew are about the season!

If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is! The trailer, which was uploaded to YouTube at the end of last month, has been making the rounds. The clip features footage of the woods at night and the text “In Bon Temps, nothing stays buried forever”. It ends with, “True Blood. The New Season. Coming This Summer”.

Everyone is speculating that this refers to Alcide’s discovery last season that the crazed Vampire King of Mississippi Russell Edgington had somehow escaped from his silver chains and cement grave. That is surely one of the things that possibilities, since the villainous vampire promised Eric that he would be back as cement was poured over his burnt body in Season 3.

Actor Denis O’Hare said late last year that Russell would be returning in Season 5, but added that True Blood creator Alan Ball “devised an amazing trick to allow me to be present, but not fully acting.” Just three days back, O’Hare also said “I’ll probably be in most of the season, starting about midway.” When pressed to reveal how Edgington escaped his cement grave, O’Hare cheekily said, “If I told you that, they’d bury me again. All I can say is that he’s got friends in unlikely places.” Buried again? Oh no, we certainly wouldn’t want that! I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out!

In the meantime, Alexander Skarsgard who plays Eric has been making the rounds with Peter Berg to publicize his new film, Battleship. In an interview with MTV just a few days ago, Skarsgard revealed that they were currently filming Episode 4 of Season 5, and said that he had already had the chance to work with new cast member, Christopher Meloni, who’s allegedly playing an old and very powerful vampire. Asked what it was like to work with Meloni, Skarsgard gushed, “He’s really, really good… and a great guy”. Since everyone on True Blood seems to get their shirt off, Skarsgard was asked if Meloni would have any scenes without his shirt on. Skarsgard cagily said, “Maybe, maybe not”, adding with a mock swoon, “He’s so hot”.

Alexander Skarsgard in Battleship

Alexander Skarsgard as Stone Hopper in Battleship

It’s going to be a while before we all get the pleasure of watching Alexander Skarsgard heat up the screen as Eric Northman on Season 5 of True Blood. In the meantime, Skarsgard fans have something else to look forward to. Yes, it’s Skarsgard’s new film, Battleship, where we’ll see him all out at sea – literally. Starring Skarsgard, together with Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, and Rihanna, this big-budget film will be out on May 18, 2012 .

Directed by Peter Berg, the action-adventure film based on the Hasbro game of the same name is set in the waters off Hawaii. The US Navy ships in the Pacific Fleet are based out of Pearl Harbor, and they end up clashing with an alien race bent on sucking power from Earth by building a power station in the ocean.

Kitsch is the cocky but likeable hero, Alex Hopper, a brash young Lieutenant serving on the USS John Paul Jones, while Brooklyn Decker plays his love interest, Sam. Skarsgard gets a meaty role as Stone Hopper, Alex’s brother and Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson. Award-winning Neeson plays Admiral Shane, Alex and Stone’s superior, and also Sam’s father. Rihanna, in her film debut, makes an appearance as a Petty Officer serving on Alex’s ship.

Battleship is from the team that brought you the Transformers, so expect non-stop adventure, close shaves for our heroes, and an eventual happy ending.

If you haven’t already seen the trailer, check it out here! Lots of Skarsgard action… and Kitsch isn’t half bad either! Who can resist men in uniform who’re out to save the world?

Anna Paquin and Joe Manganiello in True Blood

Sookie and Alcide in True Blood

Although the next season of True Blood won’t make an appearance on our television screens until Summer this year, the cast and crew have slowly been revealing little tidbits about what’s going to happen in Season 5. As always, there’s plenty of speculation about Sookie’s love-life. When we left Sookie at the end of Season 4, she had declared herself single, and sworn off Eric and Bill… and it doesn’t look like she’s going to be spending a lot of time with the two vampires either!

In an interview with TV Guide, Alexander Skarsgard, who plays the scrumptious Eric, reveals that Sookie’s “feelings are still there for both Eric and Bill… the attraction is still there, but they’re preoccupied, and so is she.” So it looks like we won’t be seeing Eric and Bill getting it on with Sookie. Instead, the two, who used to perpetually be at each other’s throats, are more likely to spend time working closely with each other in Season 5, as they try and deal with the fallout from killing Nan Flanagan in the Season 4 finale. Plus of course, it looks like Russell Edgington’s baaack (in one form or another), and Eric and Bill will have to deal with that too!

In the meantime, another hunky male in True Blood is going to be showing his alpha chops a lot more. Joe Manganiello declared that his character Alcide won’t be “taking anyone’s s**t anymore… Now you’re going to see an Alcide who’s going to slam you up against the wall and do his thing.” Oooh, I love a forceful alpha male. What’s more, Alcide may be using some of that forcefulness on Sookie herself. Manganiello teased that there’ll be many scenes and run-ins between Sookie and Alcide that “make you really nervous”.

For those of us who watch True Blood for the… hmmm… scenery, then you’ll also be pleased to know that Manganiello revealed that Season 5 will be just as risqué as before, with lots of “hot-chick werewolves and badass dudes” to keep you entertained.  Hmmmm… nice!

True Blood Season 5 will be back on HBO in Summer 2012.
